The Department of Sports Medicine and Carolina Athletics are excited to announce the second year of the Athletics Mental Health Minority Fellowship. The UNC Athletics Mental Health Minority Fellowship Program aims to reduce health disparities and improve behavioral health care outcomes for racial and ethnic populations in collegiate sport by facilitating an increase in the number of diverse providers in the behavioral healthcare system. This position is intended for an individual completing their degree program who requires supervision in order to obtain licensure and would like to receive training in student-athlete mental health. Additionally, this position will also provide the opportunity to develop an area of specialty in student-athlete mental health for an individual who is already licensed.
Position Summary:
The Minority Fellowship Program aims to provide advanced training/supervision, financial support, professional development activities, as well as professional guidance to mental health clinicians from underrepresented and underserved populations interested in a career in elite sport environments. This position is a full-time employee of the Mental Health and Performance Psychology Program (MHPP), under the University Campus Health Center and its Sports Medicine Unit working collaboratively with a team of mental health professionals, athletic trainers, dietitians, and physicians providing comprehensive and coordinated psychological services including individual and group psychotherapy, crisis intervention, consultation, outreach and performance enhancement services to varsity student-athletes. Post-graduate training and supervision will be provided based on developmental needs and areas of clinical interest.
Primary Qualifications:
• Successful completion of Masters or Doctoral degree focused in mental health (Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, Counseling or Clinical Psychology).
• Demonstrated experience in serving traditionally underserved or marginalized populations and addressing issues of diversity though culturally-informed individual counseling, groups, and/or outreach efforts.
• Interest in working with a collegiate athlete population.
