On Campus

UNC-Chapel Hill provides many programs and services for students across campus. As a full-time graduate student at UNC School of Social Work, you are eligible to participate in these programs and services.

Your UNC One Card

Although you don’t need a One Card to attend classes, you’ll want to stop by the One Card office (on the first level of UNC Student Stores) and get this photo identification card as soon as possible.

With a One Card, you can do all of these things:

  • Use any UNC Libraries services
  • Enjoy free admission to UNC sports events (there’s a lottery for football and men’s basketball tickets, but all other sports are open admission for students)
  • Get discounted tickets to UNC Performing Arts events
  • Go swimming, learn to scale a rock climbing wall, lift weights, take group fitness classes (yoga, kickboxing, pilates and more), join an intramural sports team, or sign up for a kayaking expedition through UNC Campus Recreation
  • Show your One Card to receive student discounts at stores, movie theaters, restaurants, and other locations that offer discounts to students

You can also load money onto your One Card account so that it acts as a debit/convenience card with Carolina Dining Services (including the cafes at FedEx Global, the Gillings Atrium, and the Health Sciences Library), UNC Student Stores, and most vending machines on campus.

UNC Honor System

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has had a student-led honor system for more than 100 years. Academic integrity is at the heart of Carolina, and we are all responsible for upholding the ideals of honor and integrity.

Our University’s honor code establishes expectations for our students, defines offenses under the honor code (including academic dishonesty in all forms and prohibited conduct affecting persons, property, or the integrity of the University), and outlines sanctions and penalties for violations of the honor code.

Administration of the honor code at our University is assigned to the Office of Student Conduct. Students at our School are eligible to apply for service on the Graduate and Professional Schools Honor Court, which works to uphold the University’s conduct standards and applicable policies.

Advocacy and Support

UNC-Chapel Hill offers several programs on campus that contribute toward making our campus a more inclusive environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Learn more about these programs, all with physical locations on campus:

This is not a complete list — there are dozens of student organizations and other groups that provide advocacy and support for students who identify with specific groups. We encourage all students at our School to explore campus organizations that provide advocacy and support.

Libraries

There are more than a dozen different libraries at UNC-Chapel Hill, as well as a substantial collection of online documents and resources. You can use any campus library with your UNC One Card (the Health Sciences Library is near our School), and you can research online with your Onyen and password.

In addition to academic collections, campus libraries offer many other resources to UNC-Chapel Hill students. Here are a few options:

During exam periods, campus libraries host fun stress reduction activities (including jigsaw puzzles, mini horses and other therapy animals, crafts, and snacks).

Throughout the year, campus libraries host workshops, exhibits, lectures, and other special events. You’ll find more details on the UNC Libraries event calendar.

Students, faculty, and staff who need special assistance with assignments or projects for our School may contact Angela Bardeen, who is the “liaison librarian” assigned to assist with services for the social work discipline. She maintains the “A to Z Databases: Social Work” page on the UNC Libraries website.

Learning Center

Graduate studies can be challenging. The Learning Center at UNC-Chapel Hill provides students with an array of services to help you succeed:

  • Academic coaching for individuals and groups
  • Support for students with ADHD and/or learning differences
  • Workshops and test prep courses
  • Online tips and tools

The Learning Center is on the lower level of the Student and Academic Services North Building (SASB), at the intersection of Manning Drive and Ridge Road. While most students using the Learning Center are undergraduates, students from UNC’s graduate and professional schools also use the Learning Center.

Career Services

Many students find their first full-time jobs in social work as a result of their field experiences. Other students may choose to search for different opportunities. We’re here to help!

SSW Career Day

Each spring, UNC School of Social Work hosts a career fair for social work students throughout North Carolina. More than 40 hiring organizations attend to share information about their workplaces and to talk with interested students.

Alumni/Student Job Boards

Our School invites North Carolina agencies and organizations with job vacancies in social work to post announcements to our Alumni/Student Job Board.

Another resource is available from the NC Child Welfare Education Collaborative, part of the Family and Children’s Resource Program, through funding from the NC Division of Social Services. It is a registry for job vacancies in departments of social services at the county and state level in North Carolina.

MSW Professional Development

Our School offers an annual schedule of lunchtime workshops that address different aspects of career development. You’ll find these workshops posted on our events calendar.

UNC Career Services

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offers many services to our students — workshops, recruiting events, consultations with career counselors, tips for interviewing, an online Career Readiness Workbook and more.

Visit UNC Career Services online or on campus at Hanes Hall.
