Open Rank Fixed Term Faculty (2 positions)

Positions are open until filled.

The School of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites nominations and applications for two twelve-month, non-tenure-track, open rank faculty position(s) at 1.0 FTE. The mission of the School of Social Work is to advance equity, transform systems and improve lives. The curriculum supports this mission and includes a focus on evidence-based practice; concern for disadvantaged, vulnerable, and oppressed individuals, families, and communities; and the design and development of social interventions. These faculty position(s) will be available July 1, 2023, and will be reviewed annually for reappointment.

We are seeking applicants with social work practice experience and expertise and ability to teach primarily in the Community, Management, Policy Practice (CMPP) concentration, and possibly direct practice courses. Applicants should have demonstrated skills and experience in teaching graduate classes and familiarity with social work curriculum and education. Applicants who have relevant social work professional experience and have worked as a field instructor for social work interns will be given consideration.

A clinical faculty member’s workload generally includes seven (3 credit/hr.) classes – three each semester and 1 summer school course. In some instances, permission may be given by the Dean to buy-out of teaching responsibilities if the applicant acquires external funding and if teaching needs of the School of Social Work can be met. The specific classes will be negotiated annually with the Associate Dean for Master’s of Social Work Education (M.S.W). There is also the possibility of the workload including a load of practicum students in lieu of teaching one course; again, to be negotiated with the Associate Dean based on MSW workload needs each academic year.  Applicants are expected to advise students, participate in committee work, provide service at the regional and national level, and be involved in appropriate academic projects and other scholarly endeavors as assigned.  Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with experience.

Applicants must possess an M.S.W degree from an accredited CSWE social work program and a minimum of five years post-M.S.W. practice practice. Applicants are expected to have a superior record of teaching and the ability to integrate research and scholarship into course development, assignments, and lectures. Experience working with social work students (in practice or practicum placement settings) are beneficial.

Professional experience working in the macro-arena of social work practice and or teaching courses within the community, management, and policy practice (CMPP) concentration are preferred. In addition to CMPP courses, those with qualifications and previous experience in direct practice will be given special consideration given their ability to teach across the curriculum. Applicants should have demonstrated skill and experience teaching graduate level classes and knowledge of social work curriculum. This experience can include, but is not limited to, traditional classroom teaching, teaching on-line, supervising social work students in field placement settings, trainings, and as members of projects or social work research teams.

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the positions are filled. Please address questions to Search Committee Chair Dr. Tonya VanDeinse tbv@email.unc.edu  Applications should be submitted online to:

Candidates should electronically upload a curriculum vita, a letter outlining teaching interests and experiences, a one-page statement of teaching philosophy, and include within the electronic application two to four professional referees: their institution, email, and phone number. Candidates should be prepared to provide supporting documentation (if available), including teaching evaluations, sample course materials (syllabus, assignments, sample lecture notes), and evidence of commitment to social work pedagogy and social justice.
