The newborn screening follow-up social worker is responsible for the implementation of abnormal newborn screening follow-up in the state of North Carolina for specific conditions (e.g., congenital hypothyroidism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, galactosemia, biotinidase deficiency, SCID, SMA). This implementation will take place within the overall mission and goals of the Genetics and Newborn Screening Unit. This follow-up will be accomplished for families by coordination among staff at the SLPH, health care providers, and the coordinator by reporting abnormal screening results, recommending appropriate and timely follow-up, and providing consultation/technical assistance for local health care providers.
