The Orange County Criminal Justice Resource Department has an opening for a Mental Health Diversion Coordinator. The work is primarily responsible for serving as the Coordinator for the Community Care and Diversion Response (CCDR) Team, a pre-arrest and post-charge diversionary program for individuals with a history of serious mental illness. The incumbent will work in close collaboration with the county’s four major law enforcement agencies, seek to enhance and increase diversion efforts in Orange County by diverting individuals in need of mental health interventions and treatment away from the criminal legal system. The employee will provide clinical supervision, training and support for four social worker positions and will design policies for the team. An employee in this class will meet with team members to discuss cases and client needs and identify issues that create barriers for law enforcement pre-arrest diversion. In addition, the incumbent will identify treatment and resource supports in the community to maximize opportunities for success in diversion with an enhanced focus on serving individuals from marginalized backgrounds, including people of color and those experiencing homelessness.

Work is performed under the general direction of the Criminal Justice Resource Department Director with considerable leeway to exercise independent judgment within the framework of applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures in the performance of duties, both in terms of planning and accomplishing work, and in making decisions regarding customer needs and requests and conducting project assignments. The employee will provide training for officers in de-escalation, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) and Crisis Intervention Training (CIT). Training will include responding to behavioral health calls, ensuring data is being collected and reviewed, managing and reporting for the grant and providing direct clinical support to incarcerated individuals who may be diverted post-charge. Supervision over others is required of this position. Position does related work as required.
