Position Type: Full-time
Closing Date: July 31, 2021

Position: Paralegal

Background:
Farmworkers are essential to harvest North Carolina’s many crops; they also plant trees and work with livestock and poultry. The Farmworker Unit provides free legal assistance in civil matters to this population statewide. Its office is centrally located in Raleigh, but we regularly visit rural areas where farmworkers live and work, mostly in the evenings. The Unit’s litigation primarily involves employment law, utilizing state and federal laws regulating wages, working conditions, safety, and housing. We also assist survivors of trafficking with civil remedies and preparation of immigration petitions and other available relief. The Unit has four attorneys, a community education coordinator, and three paralegals. LANC is committed to high quality representation of farmworker clients and offers an opportunity to do challenging work with committed colleagues.

Responsibilities & Duties:
Provide litigation support for cases as a part of a team with licensed attorneys. Work independently while under attorney supervision to gather and synthesize documentary and testamentary proof for cases, maintain client communications, interview clients and witnesses, and update records in the office case management system. Lead an outreach team and conduct client education sessions. Limited evening or weekend work is required.

Qualifications:
Required: fluency in written and oral English and Spanish; excellent analytical and organizational skills; good writing skills; excellent computer skills; and proven ability to learn quickly and relate well to people who are low-income or of different nationalities and cultures. Experience with migrant farmworkers or as a paralegal in the area of employment or immigration law is preferred.

Salary:
Depends on education and experience. Excellent benefits package.
