Organization Overview

Founded in 2011 and based in Durham, North Carolina, Book Harvest (www.bookharvest.org) is a nonprofit organization that provides books to children and engages families and communities in promoting children’s literacy and a lifelong love of reading. Book Harvest believes that books are essential to children’s healthy development and well-being, that all children deserve to grow up in book-rich homes, and that all parents deserve access to the literacy resources and information that will enable them to be their children’s first and best teachers and brain builders.

To progress as a community organization and change the education landscape in positive ways, we at Book Harvest believe it is our responsibility to be actively anti-racist, and we are dedicated to continuing the fight against racism in our society so that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

To date, Book Harvest has provided more than 1.8 million books and a wide array of literacy supports to children and families. Durham, North Carolina is our flagship location, and we are committed to the replication and expansion of our work throughout North Carolina and across our country.

Book Babies is a program of Book Harvest that provides books and literacy-rich home visits to children and their families from birth. A family enrolls in the program for five years, from the time their child is born. Every year, trained Coaches provide 20 new, age-appropriate books to enrolled families and engage in literacy coaching during their visits. By the time a child graduates from the program, s/he will own 100+ age-appropriate books and will, we believe, enter school more ready to learn.

Responsibilities

The Book Babies Literacy Coach will work 40 hours per week and will be responsible for supporting all aspects of the Book Babies program. Typical work hours span Monday-Friday and may include evenings and occasional Saturdays. Caseload will range from 80-120 families. Duties associated with the home visits include scheduling, travel, preparation for the visit in accordance with curriculum guidelines, timely and accurate data entry, administration of assessments and reflective supervision.
The Book Babies Literacy Coach maintains a minimum caseload of 80 families; each family is expected to have approximately four home visits per year. This number will be adjusted as needed based on learnings of virtual home visiting and strategic planning of the program.

Special Projects (15%)
In accordance with the talents of each Coach, the Book Babies Manager reserves additional time for Coaches to work on strategic and growth opportunities for the program. Examples of these projects could include collaborating on our existing partnership programs, conducting outreach within the community to strengthen enrollment, research, and other projects based on the Literacy Coach’s expressed interest and programmatic needs.
Attending several events each year where all staff are expected to participate. These include events such as the Book Babies Open House, Graduation, celebrations, annual staff retreat, and others events as needed.
Specific projects will be discussed and outlined with Coaches individually.
