THE ORGANIZATION

The Art Therapy Institute is a growing non-profit mental health agency that utilizes expressive therapy with various populations and communities. The organization’s mission is to advance the well-being and mental health of diverse communities through accessible, strengths-based, culturally-responsive art therapy, education, and research.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Executive Director for the Art Therapy Institute (ATI) serves as the face of this community-based organization. The applicant must have non-profit experience with an excellent working knowledge of mental health providers in the Orange and Durham County areas. The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and management of ATI and programs within ATI. This includes strategic planning, financial performance, board partnership, infrastructure, operations, personnel management, administration and clinical oversight, volunteer engagement, and community relations. Other key duties include fundraising, marketing and community outreach. The Executive Director will also have knowledge of health policies, and resources for technical assistance; training; advocacy expertise; implementation of software tools.

● Pay: $50,000.00 – $70,000.00 per year

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

● Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in mental health, social work, public health, non-profit management or healthcare management. Master’s Degree preferred.
● Non-profit organizations and/or business management experience including strong understanding of working budgets and financial planning
● Personal and professional commitment to ongoing education and training to strengthen diversity, equity, inclusion, justice and accessibility practices agency-wide
● Experience/background in mental health counseling preferred
● Knowledge of art therapy and expressive art therapy treatment modalities preferred
● Strong leadership and management skills
● Strong organizational skills including strong attention to details, ability to meet deadlines, ability to multitask
● Strong communication skills
● Digital and technical proficiency

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

● At least 5-10 years of experience in a healthcare-related program.
● Knowledge and/or experience understanding insurance based services.
● Experience working with a Board of Directors.
● Expertise in managing finances for a non-profit organization. Familiarity with reading and maintaining financial reports.
● Experience in program development, grant writing, and fund development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership

● Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop a new Strategic Plan.
● Lead in a manner that supports Art Therapy Institutes mission.
● Ensure the organization’s financial integrity by using best practices and complying with all applicable laws, regulations, and internal controls.
● Ensure a positive, team-oriented work environment.
● Stay current regarding changing health information, education, and non-profit trends.
● Attend occasional programs, events, and meetings occurring outside of office hours.
● Ensure Art Therapy Institute policies and procedures are implemented and followed.

Operations and Staff Management

● Provide regular program evaluation, consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals.
● Oversee and abide by the North Carolina Licensing Board code of law and ethics to ensure that care is focused on best practices and is legally compliant. Stay current on any updates to these laws.
● Maintain regular and consistent communication with Program Director and Clinical Director to offer updates and provide support for ATI’s overall organization, marketing, programs, workshops and community based events.
● Manage and maintain payroll.
● Communicate with various contracted professionals to help manage client payment, insurance compliance, and navigate any issues with insurance companies.
● Supervise Administrative Staff and Contract Clinicians.
● Conduct performance appraisals for paid staff.
● Collaborate with staff regarding service delivery, requests, volunteers, etc.
● Review and approve vendor contracts for services, ensuring budgetary compliance and best practices.
● Ensure effective electronic data collection, data entry, and generation of reports to support grants and committees.

Board Relationship and Duties
● Report to and cultivate a strong, transparent working relationship with the Board and ensure open and timely communication.
● Recommend, seek approval, and execute strategies that ensure best practices and comply with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
● In a timely and accurate manner, provide all information necessary for the Board to function properly and make informed decisions. Help attain successful results.
● Attend Board meetings, prepare reports and data, and provide recommendations for programs, actions, and policies. Perform routine program quality assessment.
● Support and execute goals of the Strategic Plan; monitor and report on progress.
● Other job duties as assigned.

Community Partnerships
● Serve as Art Therapy Institute’s primary spokesperson. Share the mission of ATI with the greater community.
● Promote ATI and its programs, and advocate for the field through presenting workshops/continuing education, publications, etc.
● Increase awareness, enhance the organization’s image, and proactively communicate with other organizations, schools, non-profit and art foundations, etc.
● Develop and build relationships and resources outside the Art Therapy Institute.
● Maintain relationships with all existing community partnerships and be willing to build new community partnerships.
● Develop and guide strategic partnerships: build relationships to garner new business and mental health opportunities.
● Maintain agency contracts with local schools and agencies which ATI serves.

Business Development & Finances
● Expand revenue-generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and expansion.
● Develop a realistic annual budget. Monitor and report on monthly income and expenses.
● Identify funding opportunities; prepare grant proposals; implement and monitor grant-funded projects.
● Organize and execute a grant writing campaign with the support of the Board of Directors.
● Deepen and refine all communications, including social media platforms; website; newsletters; digital and print marketing materials, and press releases with the goal of creating a stronger brand.
● Oversee major marketing events/communications, including community fundraising events at local businesses.
● Assist with all financial duties associated with ATI including working with contracted professionals to manage accounts payables and receivables amongst other financial duties.

Data Collection, Evaluation and Reporting
● Follow all guidelines regarding files, assessments, demographics, insurance, code of ethics, supervision and licensure.
● Oversee continued implementation of program evaluation measures to ensure ongoing assessment of program effectiveness.
● Maintain/update databases with accurate and current information (this includes donor management, newsletter, listservs, clinical/program demographics).
