Join our team as Health and Justice Organizer! Through training, organizing, and communications, the
Health and Justice Organizer provides education and outreach around the state to protect
communities from harmful pesticides and chemicals, especially farmworkers and their families on the
frontlines of agriculture. This role is responsible for ensuring the success of the Environmental Justice
Academy for farmworkers and families in North Carolina, sharing information about the health
impacts of pesticides and other environmental health issues, and building community participation in
advocacy for food sovereignty and agricultural reform.
Position Requirements
The ideal candidate speaks Spanish with native fluency, loves working with people, brings strong
organizing and communication skills, has relationships with pesticide-impacted communities, and is
passionate about environmental justice and building power to address systemic disparities impacting
communities of color. We’re looking for:
● Experience in community organizing or outreach
● Spanish and English fluency (written and verbal) required
● Knowledge of agriculture, farmworker issues, and environmental health. A background in science
or public health is very helpful.
● Experience in training, facilitation, adult education, or popular education.
● An ability to learn and explain simple principles of agriculture and science.
● Some digital and print communications skills, with proficiency in office software and social media.
● Experience independently managing projects with successful and measurable results
● A deep understanding of systemic health disparities and a commitment to addressing the
intersectional injustices of agrochemical pollution.
Responsibilities
Community Training, Outreach, and Organizing
● Coordinate the successful implementation of the Environmental Justice Academy, a series of
workshops for farmworkers and families.
● Build statewide participation in health and justice campaigns, with a focus on farmworkers and
impacted communities.
● Seasonally provide education and resources on pesticide safety and workplace rights to
farmworkers and families, advocates, and growers.
● Give presentations and organize workshops and events about pesticide impacts, environmental
health and justice, and healthy solutions.
● Build community leadership, skills, and confidence for advocacy.
● Strengthen relationships with NC agencies that serve farmworker communities and explore
opportunities for collaboration.
● Cultivate strong relationships with impacted community members and act as a bridge for
information-sharing and organizing opportunities.
● Serve as a resource on the health impacts of pesticide and environmental health exposures and
stay up-to-date on the latest research and news.
Communications
● Strengthen communications and messaging, and develop digital and print resources (factsheets,
social media, newsletters, and web) on NC environmental health issues and campaigns, amplify
voices of impacted communities, and engage decision-makers and statewide constituents to build
power for change.
● Increase Spanish-language environmental health materials and test strategies to expand reach in
NC Latinx communities
● Manage media relations with NC Spanish-language press, and ensure that information reaches
target audiences.
Additionally: Collaborate with other members of staff on programs, advocacy, and organizational
initiatives to advance the mission of the organization.
This is a full time (40 hours/week) position with paid vacation, holidays, and health and dental
benefits. The starting salary range is $46,740 – $54,000, based on experience and other factors. A
flexible schedule is required, including some weekend and evening hours, especially during the
agricultural season (March – October). This is a hybrid position, with some days spent in our office in
downtown Durham, NC, and other days based in the community. This role involves time in the car;
must have access to a reliable vehicle and a valid driver’s license. Mileage reimbursement is provided
for non-commute travel.
