The Assistant Director develops and implements the LGBTQ+ Center’s educational and programming initiatives, including the D.E.A.C. Allies educational program, co-curricular engagement opportunities, and student leadership development programs. The Assistant Director develops the capacity of and assists in the management of student staff, provides thought partnership to campus partners and student organizations, oversees programmatic assessment, and oversees day-to-day management of
the LGBTQ+ Center.

The LGBTQ+ Center provides education, advocacy, support, and personal and professional development to students, faculty, and staff around gender identity and sexual orientation, while centering the needs
and experiences of queer and trans students of color. The LGBTQ+ Center is part of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, of which the Assistant Director will be a valued member.

Essential Functions:

Program Development and Student Engagement:

● Develops and updates curriculum, serves as facilitator for, and coordinates the execution of the Center’s multi-stakeholder, campus-wide LGBTQ+ knowledge and skill development program, Developing Empowering and Affirming Communities (D.E.A.C.) Allies.

● Oversees all Center programming, and works with Program Coordinator, Graduate Assistants, and student employees to develop, plan, and implement programs at all stages of event planning and follow-up, including Queer History Month programming, major Center events, and the annual Lavender Graduation celebration.

● Develops, plans, and implements pathways for student engagement with the LGBTQ+ Center, including the Change Agents student leadership development program and others.

● Manages programmatic assessment for the Center.

● Develops, plans, and implements – either as facilitator or the facilitator trainer – identity spaces for various campus constituencies (i.e. LGBTQ-identified first year students, queer and trans students of color, LGBTQ faculty and staff, and other groups as identified).

● Works collaboratively with other units to develop co-sponsored programs that advance university goals.

● Facilitates intentional conversations that support student identity development, build cultural competency, and work through interpersonal conflict.

Supervision & Center Management:

● Oversees Center communications plan across multiple platforms (i.e. flyers, listserv, social media, and website), and manages Program Coordinator and Graduate Assistants in implementing it.

● Manages and tracks day-to-day budget, purchasing, and procurement functions for the LGBTQ+ Center’s annual operating budget and gift funds.

● In collaboration with the Program Coordinator, develops and trains the student worker team to develop and implement programs, create communications, and to represent the LGBTQ+ Center and ODI.

● Oversees Center daily operations and cultivates physical space of the LGBTQ+ Center lounge in alignment with strategic direction and community building goals.

Advancing Strategic Vision:

● Oversees participation in and represents the Center at events including Campus Services Day, Admitted Students forums, the Advisers Forum, and various orientation fairs.

● Provides support and advice to student coalitions and organizations seeking partnership, guidance, or advising on questions related to gender and sexuality.

● Fosters relationships and partnerships with other offices and academic/administrative departments.

Required Education and Experience:

● Bachelor’s degree plus 2 years of post-educational work experience, or a Master’s degree in student affairs, counseling, women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, ethnic studies, or related field.

● Demonstrated evidence of work experience with a culturally diverse student body and staff with a commitment to fostering diversity, access, inclusion, and equity.

● Demonstrated understanding of the developmental needs and experiences of LGBTQ-identified students, with a specific focus on LGBTQ students of color.

● Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks with efficiency and attention to detail.

● Ability to occasionally work beyond the standard workday, including nights and weekends, for programs and special events (with compensatory time off).

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

The ideal candidate for this role will have or be developing the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Program Development and Student Engagement Experience

● Developing content for and delivering high quality trainings, workshops, and/or educational programming about gender and sexuality.

● Experience managing complex projects from inception to completion, including working with multiple collaborators and stakeholders.

● Experience developing programs to foster student engagement, community building, and sense of belonging, preferably in a collegiate environment.

● Experience developing and using tools for program assessment.

Supervision & Center Management

● Experience managing simple budgets, and an understanding of basic budgeting principles.

● Experience successfully managing an organization’s communications across multiple platforms.

● Ability to manage the daily logistics of maintaining a physical space, including overseeing supply ordering, physical access considerations, and scheduled maintenance and care.

Advancing Strategic Vision

● Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability in problem solving and conflict resolution.

● Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to represent the Center in a number of contexts.

● Ability to help campus partners understand the needs and experiences of students from diverse backgrounds.

Accountabilities:

● Responsible for own work.

● Oversees and coordinates the work of graduate assistants, work-study students, and student programming partners.

● Assists with Center budgeting and financial management.
