In memory of Andrew William Dobelstein Jr., professor emeritus

UNC School of Social Work professor emeritus Andrew William Dobelstein Jr. died on Sept. 22, 2023, in Chapel Hill, N.C. 

Dobelstein, who was born on July 18, 1934, earned his bachelor’s degree from Valparaiso University and served as a social work aide in the United States Army. He later received his master’s degree from Case Western Reserve University and Ph.D. from Duke University. 

Dobelstein began his career teaching at the School of Social Work in 1968. Not only did he help develop the community organization for the School, he also used his time to help shape policy for those living in poverty in Western Carolina communities. Dobelstein authored 10 social policy textbooks and received multiple awards for his work.

A memorial service for Dobelstein was held on Monday, Oct. 23, at 2 p.m. at Chapel of the Cross. It was followed by an open reception at the Carol Woods Retirement Community. You can read Dobelstein’s full obituary here.
