20-Month Advanced Standing MSW Program

In the 20-Month Advanced Standing MSW program, students begin classes in January and graduate after completing two spring semesters, two summer terms, and one fall semester. It may be possible for a student to continue employment part-time while pursuing this degree option, if the student’s employment can be applied as field experience.

Course Distribution

First Spring Semester

Students in the 20-Month Advanced Standing MSW program complete 6 credit hours in the first spring semester, attending classes on Monday afternoons and evenings. These courses are required:

  • SOWO 702, Human Behavior in Context (1.5 credit hours)
  • SOWO 712, Research and Evaluation (1.5 credit hours)
  • SOWO 732, Brief History of Oppression and Social Welfare Policy (1.5 credit hours)
  • SOWO 772, Social Work Practice (1.5 credit hours)

First Summer Term

In the first summer term, 20-Month Advanced Standing students complete a field practicum and an elective course from the Specialization Curriculum:

  • SOWO 522, Pre-Specialization Practicum for Advanced Standing Students (4 credit hours)
  • Elective (1.5 credit hours or 3 credit hours, depending on course)

In addition, each student completes one of the following courses, depending on the student’s concentration:

  • SOWO 740, Implementing Evidence-Informed Practice for Individuals, Families, and Groups (3 credit hours) for the Direct Practice concentration, OR
  • SOWO 770, Implementing Evidence-Informed Practice with Organizations and Communities (3 credit hours for the Community Management and Policy Practice concentration

Fall Semester, Second Spring Semester, and Second Summer Term

After completing the first spring semester and the first summer term, 20-Month Advanced Standing students complete courses in the Specialization Curriculum over the next 12 months:

  • Advanced theory/practice course (3 credit hours)
  • Advanced policy course (1.5 credit hours)
  • Advanced research course (3 credit hours)
  • Advanced field practicum (12 credit hours — 6 in fall, 6 in spring)
  • Electives (7.5 credit hours)

During specialization, the advanced field practicum represents 24 hours per week in a field placement.
