Tiny Homes Village Project

North Carolina is in short supply of affordable, sustainable housing, particularly homes for individuals with mental illness, who are among the most at risk for homelessness. Our School and nonprofit Cross Disability Services (XDS) Inc. are working to solve this problem through the development of Tiny Homes Village at the Farm at Penny Lane.

When complete, the project will include 15 homes (each about 400 square feet in size), a clubhouse, outdoor pavilion, walking trails, and other amenities, all of which are designed to support individuals and veterans with mental illness. Associate professor Amy Blank Wilson serves as co-director of the project, which is being built in Chatham County.

Donors such as long-time School supporters Prudence and Peter Meehan and Daniel and Anita McClernon are among those who have helped ensure that this truly innovative project moves from idea to action.

Thanks to their generous gifts and additional private grants, Tiny Homes Village has secured funding to begin the project:
• Construction of six homes (each home costs $50,000 to build)
• Road improvements
• Sewer installation
• HVAC unit installation
• Carpeting

You, too, can help! Funding is still needed to construct the remaining nine homes and to support installation of public water for the clubhouse and pavilion.
