Advanced Standing Program

The UNC School of Social Work is pleased to now offer both a 12-month and 20-month Advanced Standing Program.

The Advanced Standing Program is for students who have graduated from an accredited BSW program. The program begins with a Bridge Program that provides an advanced overview of the generalist program curriculum and continues with specialization field and coursework in the students' chosen concentration. Students complete a total of 40 credit hours. Advanced standing students meet the same distributional requirements as 2-year full-time and 3-year MSW students.

12-month Advanced Standing Program

The 12-month Advanced Standing tentative application deadline is January 12, 2021. Orientation and classes will begin May 11, following the university's registrar calendar. Twelve-month Advanced Standing students complete 13 credit hours over the summer:

  • SoWo 702: Human Behavior in Context (1.5 credit hours)
  • SoWo 712: Research and Evaluation (1.5 credit hours)
  • SoWo 732: Brief History of Oppression and Social Welfare Policy (1.5 credit hours)
  • SoWo 772: Social Work Practice Module (1.5 credit hours)
  • SoWo 522: Pre-Specialization Practicum for Advanced Standing Students (4 credit hours)

and one of the following:

  • SoWo 740: Implementing Evidence-Informed Practice for Individuals, Families, and Groups (3 credit hours) - for Direct Practice concentration students, or
  • SoWo 770: Implementing Evidence-Informed Practice with Organizations and Communities (3 credit hours) - for Community Management and Policy Practice concentration student

Twelve-month Advanced Standing students will then join all rising final-year MSW students to complete the specialization year curriculum during the academic year. Please see the chart below for the specialiation curriculum outline.

20-month Advanced Standing Program

The 20-month Advanced Standing application deadline is October 13, 2020 with enrollment beginning in the spring semester on January 11, 2021. Applicants with a BSW currently employed in social-work related settings and/or those interested in advancing their macro social work skills are strongly encouraged to apply.

A special orientation will be held December 2020; date and time TBD. Classes in the first spring semester will be held Monday afternoons and evenings for a total of 6 credit hours:

  • SoWo 702: Human Behavior in Context (1.5 credit hours)
  • SoWo 712: Research and Evaluation (1.5 credit hours)
  • SoWo 732: Brief History of Oppression and Social Welfare Policy (1.5 credit hours)
  • SoWo 772: Social Work Practice (1.5 credit hours)

Students will complete the following courses and field practicum Summer 2021:

  • SoWo 522: Pre-Specilization Practice for Advanced Standing Students (4 credit hours)
  • Specialization course elective (1.5 or 3 credit hours)

and one of the following:

  • SoWo 740: Implementing Evidence-Informed Practice for Individuals, Families, and Groups (3 credit hours) - for Direct Practice concentration students, or
  • SoWo 770: Implementing Evidence-Informed Practice with Organizations and Communities (3 credit hours) - for Community Management and Policy Practice concentration student

Twenty-month Advanced Standing students will complete specialization coursework over the course of two summers and an academic year. Please see the chart below for the specialization curriculum outline.
