Join us for the webinar, "Re-Imagining Community Safety: How We Can Move Beyond Policing"

The School of Social Work’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Jordan Institute for Families are co-sponsoring a webinar on Tuesday, June 30 titled, “Re-Imagining Community Safety: How We Can Move Beyond Policing.”

The webinar begins at 1:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The discussion will be led by a guest panel that includes:

•    Maya Hart, MSW ’20, and North Carolina coordinator of SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective, a group that works to strengthen and amplify the collective voices of indigenous women and women of color to achieve reproductive justice by eradicating reproductive oppression and securing human rights. Hart is also a member of Durham’s Black Youth Project 100, an organization of Black youth activists working to create justice and freedom for all Black people.
•    Seth Kotch, Ph.D., associate professor with UNC’s Department of American Studies and author of, Lethal State, which recounts the history of the death penalty in North Carolina.
•    Danielle Purifoy, Ph.D., a member of the Core Team, Durham Beyond Policing Coalition, a grassroots coalition to divest from policing and prisons and reinvest municipal resources into supporting the health and well-being of Black and Brown communities in Durham. Purifoy is also an assistant professor with UNC’s Department of Geography.
•    James Williams, J.D., the former chief public defender for Orange and Chatham counties and a member of the Orange Bias Free Policing Coalition, a diverse and representative group of Orange County residents committed to ensuring racially equitable and fair policing in Orange County. Williams has also served as chair of the Task Force on Racial and Ethnic Bias in the Criminal Justice System.
