SSW honors soon-to-be graduates with two virtual celebrations

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work will honor 142 students this weekend during two virtual celebrations online.

Among these students, 138 have completed requirements for the Master of Social Work degree and four have completed requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Social Work degree. The School will award these degrees formally during a commencement ceremony later in 2020, after restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic have been lifted.

A virtual reception for Ph.D. students in the Class of 2020 is scheduled for Friday evening, according to Associate Dean for Doctoral Education Mimi Chapman.

On Saturday, a virtual celebration for MSW students in the Class of 2020 will include an informal online social gathering and a structured program featuring remarks from Dean Gary Bowen, Senior Associate Dean for MSW Education Lisa Zerden, Associate Dean for Doctoral Education Mimi Chapman and Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Travis Albritton.

Professor Iris Carlton-LaNey will also address students during the MSW celebration. Students requested that she speak, with many students and alumni describing her as among their most inspirational teachers.

Faculty and staff of the School have recorded messages for the students, which will be compiled into a recognition video that will be presented during the Saturday celebration. This video will be available for online viewing by alumni and others at a later time.
