About the Durham Public Schools Foundation

The Durham Public Schools Foundation (DPSF) launched in the fall of 2018 as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit that unites our DPS school communities, public- and private- sector resources and community leaders around strategies to strengthen our Durham public schools. DPSF was founded by a group of Durham community leaders, educators, parents and DPS alumni who share a belief that we can fulfill the promise of public education in Durham when our whole community comes together to support our public schools.

DPSF believes that the success of Durham is linked to the success of Durham Public Schools. For Durham to reach its full potential, we must have public schools where all students can thrive. DPSF brings together our community resources to champion public education, invest in the people in our schools and foster a culture of equity through innovation across DPS.

Position Description

The Durham Public Schools Foundation is seeking a dynamic part-time Development and Communications Manager to work directly with the Executive Director on crafting and executing a development plan that positions the organization for strategic growth and to meet ambitious fundraising goals that match our ambitious organizational goals. This position will work closely with the Executive Director as a strategic thought partner and will add leadership to building this new organization’s operations.

Hours and compensation: The Development and Communications Manager will work 20 to 25 hours a week as an independent contractor (with the possibility to become full-time in the future). DPSF has an office downtown but this position will primarily work remotely and the work schedule is flexible. Hourly pay is $30 an hour.

The range of responsibilities include:

  • Support the creation of development goals and strategy, working closely with the Executive Director to set strategic goals for growth, identify strategies to reach those goals and track progress toward goals.
  • Support development strategies, including drafting funding proposals and identifying potential funding sources.
  • Build and maintain development processes and infrastructure, including managing donor database and creating donor reports needed to support development strategies.
  • Manage fundraising events, providing project management and leadership to ensure the success of major DPSF community engagement and fundraising events.
  • Craft communications, including creating a social media strategy, writing monthly newsletters to DPSF’s email listserv, and drafting donor communications.

  • High level of initiative, resourcefulness and productivity and comfort working in a fast-paced, start-up environment.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, exceptional attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to independently execute projects and manage competing priorities.
    • Ability to craft compelling communications to a diverse range of stakeholders, including through social media.
    • Experience developing and executing fundraising strategies.
    • Experience managing large, complex events.
    • Track record of setting, meeting and reporting on measurable goals.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Proficiency with donor databases, Excel and high level of comfort working with data.
    • Familiarity with public education policy and knowledge of Durham Public Schools a plus.
