County Social Services Director


Burke County North Carolina has a great career opportunity for a “County Social Services Director”.  This position is located in the beautiful community of Morganton, NC.

Salary Range: $81,019.68 - $125,579.45

Pay Grade: 37

This position is appointed by and reports to the County Board of Social Services.  This executive level position has administrative and managerial responsibility for departmental operations with a staff of 194 and a budget of $17 million.  Duties include management of programs, policies, and procedures as directed by the Board of Social Services and in conformity with federal, state and county policy and legal constraints.  Position provides both strategic and tactical leadership and direction for programming to ensure the requisite delivery of services to the Burke County residents.

Ideal candidate will have thorough knowledge of government budgeting, human behavior, social work skills and techniques, management principles and practices, legal aspects of public welfare programs, and applicable federal and state laws, rules and regulations.  Must be able to exercise sound judgment, communicate effectively, and develop and maintain effective working relationships with the public, and with federal, state and county officials. 

Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Social Work and two (2) years of supervisory experience in the delivery of client services; or
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and (3) three years of supervisory experience in the delivery of client services, one of which must have been in Social Services; or
  • graduation from a four-year college or university and (3) three years of supervisory experience in the delivery of client services, two of which must have been in Social Services; or
  • an equivalent combination of training and experience. Possess and maintain a valid drivers’ license.

Preferred Requirements:  In additions to those cited above a preferred candidate will have experience in the area of change management, business process improvement and program development.
