Part-time Artist Support Specialist (Social Worker/Case Manager) for Arts Organization



Music Maker Relief Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that preserves American musical traditions. We support the creativity and artistic excellence of senior, traditional musicians through career development and by providing grants and services to improve the quality of their lives.

Position: Part Time Social Worker/Case Manager:

This is a part time position requiring 20 hours per week based in Hillsborough, Monday - Friday between 9am- 5pm. Occasional travel may be required. A bachelor’s degree in social work or related field and relevant experience are required. Pay will be hourly at $20-$22 per hour, commensurate with experience. The partner artists that will be your clients are musicians over 55 years of age (most in the 60s and 70s) that have an annual income of less than $24,000. The majority of artists are African American. Most of your contact with clients will be over the telephone, although you will sometimes visit artists in their homes or meet with them in our office when they travel to the Hillsborough area for performances.

General Duties:

  • Assess partner artist’s (client) quality of life and unmet needs in the areas of housing, medical care, nutrition, transportation and ability to travel
  • Research community resources in artist's home communities and liaise between these services and the artists for a successful partnership such as financial assistance, legal aid, housing, medical and food resources
  • Assist artists in negotiating the application processes of obtaining Medicare, Social Security, and other relevant services.
  • Provide ongoing comprehensive case management services to artists
    • Counsel partner artists to help them overcome challenges, recover from illness, and meet basic needs.
    • Monitor, evaluate, and record partner artist progress to measurable goals
      • Design and implement yearly assessment of partner artist’s needs and program efficacy
      • Maintain records of interactions with partner artists
  • Work with management staff to develop Artist Grant budget and administer grants
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, public health or related field
  • 1-3 years previous social work experience
  • Current valid driver’s license and dependable transportation with auto liability insurance

Minimum Qualification:

Required Skills:

  • Thorough knowledge of social work principles and their applications to complex casework
  • Considerable knowledge of resources available to alleviate poverty
  • Foundational understanding of the cycles of poverty and aging
    • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and the ability to work with diverse groups. Possess empathetic listening and communication skills that can be adapted to artists with various needs
    • Ability to communicate effectively and establish supportive client relationships with senior citizens
    • Ability to work effectively and autonomously in a self directed role
    • Highly collaborative with strong interpersonal and team building skills
    • Ability to manage a wide variety of projects/demands at one time
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
    •   Strong organizational and administrative skills including proficiency in office software and google applications
