Research Assistant-Data Collector

Description of duties:
A research study based at the UNC Injury Prevention Research Center (IPRC) is seeking a part-time temporary research assistant to assist with data collection during a 3-year evaluation of a sexual violence prevention program for teen boys. The research assistant would work directly with male adolescents, program leaders, group education leaders, and researchers at Children’s Home Society of North Carolina (CHSNC) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC Chapel Hill).

The research assistant will be hired by UNC Chapel Hill; however, work activities will be conducted primarily in Guilford County. This position is funded by a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Help recruit and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with community agencies that serve as research sites
  • Coordinate with and support research team members who lead group education sessions
  • Recruit and enroll study participants by sharing information about the study and obtaining informed consent in individual and small group settings
  • Administer surveys to participants to collect accurate data
  • Help develop and take the lead in maintaining a participant tracking database
  • Maintain regular contact with study participants in accordance with approved study protocols
  • Securely maintain data and data collection tools in compliance with UNC Institutional Review Board regulations
  • Participate on the research team by
    • Serving as a liaison between community sites, especially control sites, and CHSNC and UNC Chapel Hill
    • Participating in relevant research team meetings
    • Working with other research team members to develop, revise and adapt methods for improving enrollment, tracking, follow up, incentive disbursement, and data collection

Number of hours per week: This position will work, on average, 30 hours per week

Essential skills, experience and education:

  • Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills for working with agency leaders, as well as with males who are 14-20 years old
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, creativity, persistence, and enthusiasm for using a variety of approaches for following up with research participants over the study period
  • Comfortable using computers (including Microsoft Office technology such as Word, Excel and Outlook), iPads, and various popular mobile and social media platforms
  • Attentive to detail, accuracy and confidentiality in maintaining research data.

Preferred skills:

  • Experience working with and managing groups, particularly male youths
  • Previous social research experience
