We are currently recruiting for a Social Worker to function as an Evening Teacher/Counselor at Wright School in Durham, North Carolina. The primary purpose of this position is to assess, plan, and implement the treatment program component for behaviorally/emotionally handicapped children assigned to their unit. This includes a diagnostic teaching model which focuses on identifying social, behavioral/emotional and developmental needs, then designing schedules, lessons/activities based on that assessment. Once the Evening Teacher/Counselor identifies an individual child’s course of treatment, they are responsible for collaborating with their team and creating a Re-Education Plan that describes and documents treatment. They are also responsible for conducting ongoing evaluations to determine the need for modifications and additions to the treatment program. Monthly updates to the Re-Education Plan and a discharge summary are formal written documents which detail the implementation and response to the treatment intervention at Wright School. This position is exposed to a danger element and stressful environment due to aggressive/explosive behavior of children with severe behavioral disturbances. Evening Teacher/Counselor is a direct care position that spends from 1:30pm until bedtime (8:30pm) with students.

The normal working hours for this position are Evenings 1- 11 pm, Mon. – Thurs. however, flexibility is required to meet facility needs. This is full-time position and eligible for full state benefits package.

Wright School delivers treatment services using the Re-Education philosophy, model and related staffing pattern. Rather than a medical model where treatment services are delivered by a variety of specialist (nurses, occupational therapists, recreational therapists, art therapists, play therapist, rehabilitation therapist, etc.) the primary agents of change at Wright School are Teacher/Counselors, supported by the EDA staff. Educational and mental health professionals are cross trained and the methodology, vocabulary laws and regulations of both disciplines. Treatment services are planned and delivered by the milieu team of Teachers/Counselors and EDAs and include social skills training, cognitive behavioral therapy, group problem solving, individual and group behavior management programs. Treatment services to families are also delivered by Liaison Teacher/Counselors who provide a variety of skill-based training to families and how to meet children’s special needs at home.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Qualified candidates must document on the application that they possess education/experience that clearly demonstrates all of the following:

Extensive knowledge of residential treatment of children with behavioral/emotional disabilities under the age of thirteen
Knowledge of practical application of task analysis and goal setting with students who have a variety of psychiatric diagnoses
Ability to work and plan with clinical staff in assessing child behavior and planning and implementing treatment plans
Working knowledge of problems and needs of severely emotional and assaultive children and youth
Ability to establish rapport and respect without undue resort to physical control and authoritative attitude
Ability to establish good working relationships with paraprofessionals, professionals, students, and parents
Good verbal and written communication and organizational skills

Management Preferences:
Experience in behavioral management, preferably with children and youth with emotional disturbance or mental disability
Outdoor education experience

Physical Requirements:
Physical ability to engage in recreational activities with 6 – 12-year-old children
Physical ability to manage disruptive children and youth without harm to students or staff
Must pass pre-employment CPI Physical Requirements Testing
This is a very active position

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Master’s degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution; or

Bachelor’s degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of directly related experience; or

Master’s degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of directly related experience; or

Bachelor’s degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of directly related experience; or

an equivalent combination of education and experience.
