Brunswick County is seeking a social worker to join the Department of Social Service. This position performs social work functions in the Child Protective Service Unit, In Home Services. Duties include working with families who have been substantiated or found in need of services due to child abuse or neglect. The social worker in this position assists families in developing a services agreement that addresses both safety and well-being needs of the children and family. This social worker is responsible for prioritizing and coordinating services; gathering facts about cases; determining risks to children and taking necessary action to insure the safety of children; developing/completing safety plans; securing and filing custody orders as needed; testifying in court proceeding and completing requests for assistance from other counties. Requires the ability to interpret law and policies in arriving at sound casework decisions. Must be able to work with and relate to all types of people. Must have skills in offering an involuntary service to clients who may be resistant to services through the establishment of a positive working relationship. Must be able to keep clear and concise records. Must be able to plan and execute work effectively. Performs other duties as required including occasional after-hours coverage and working flexible schedule as needed. This position reports to the In-Home Services Social Work Supervisor.

Hours are 8:30 am – 5:00 pm Monday – Friday. Must be available to work during emergency situations.
Qualifications
Master’s degree from an accredited school of social work and one year of social work experience; or a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of social work and two years of social work or counseling experience; or Master’s degree in a counseling field and two years of social work or counseling experience; or a four-year degree in a human services field or related curriculum and three years of social work or counseling experience; or graduation from a four-year college or university and four years of experience in rehabilitation counseling, pastoral counseling or a related human service field providing experience in the techniques of casework, groupwork or community organization; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated office machines, which include typewriters, calculators, copiers, facsimile machines, etc. Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pound of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
