The Project Manager for State Engagement is a new position at the Carolina Center for Public Service (CCPS) focused on key initiatives and activities aimed at enhancing the university’s connections and collaborations with partners across the state of North Carolina. CCPS, a pan-university center reporting to the Office of the Provost, engages and supports the faculty, students and staff of UNC-Chapel Hill in meeting the needs of North Carolina and beyond. CCPS strengthens the university’s public service commitment by promoting scholarship and service that are responsive to the concerns of the state and contribute to the common good.
At the forefront of the Project Manager’s responsibilities is the coordination of campus-wide initiatives, with a particular focus on two key areas: the annual Tar Heel Bus Tour and the establishment and upkeep of a comprehensive tool for documenting the university’s engaged projects and partnerships throughout the state.
The Project Manager has responsibility for the overall coordination of all aspects of the Tar Heel Bus Tour, encompassing both logistical and content-related elements. This involves seamless collaboration with the Chancellor’s office, tour leadership, planning committee and other key partners such as university communications and financial management. Through effective coordination, the Project Manager ensures the successful execution of the tour, maximizing its impact in fostering connections and promoting the university’s commitment to engagement.
Another critical responsibility is overseeing and managing the documentation of the university’s engagement initiatives across North Carolina. Following a comprehensive design thinking process undertaken by university stakeholders during the 2023-2024 academic year, CCPS is working in partnership with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research to develop a searchable online database. The Project Manager will take the lead in planning and coordinating this process, including implementation and upkeep of the database, as well as strategizing on how to effectively promote and utilize it in planning activities and advocating for campus and community partnerships.
Principle Functions
-Project Management of the Tar Heel Bus Tour:
Working collaboratively with tour leadership and the Office of the Chancellor, oversee all aspects of the annual Tar Heel Bus Tour (THBT), including:
• Planning of the route(s) and stops, including working with the executive and planning committees
• Overseeing travel logistics including contracts and arrangements with bus company, hotels and dining establishments
• Coordinating and tracking multiple related tasks, including, but not limited to, the application and selection process; communication with participants and campus and community hosts, creation of the Field Guide and purchasing of THBT merchandise and supplies
• Working with the events team to plan orientation and end-of-tour celebration as well as possible networking events following the tour
• Coordinating formal evaluation of the event with the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment
• Managing opportunities for ongoing engagement with partners visited during the THBT, including making connections, and, when funds are available, managing the process of funding requests to encourage ongoing partnerships.
-Administration of program to document and communicate Carolina’s engagement with the state
• Implement plan developed by design-thinking work group of the Carolina Engagement Council
• Work with units across campus to build a comprehensive record of community partnerships and share collected information with key stakeholders
• Develop and implement plan for continued data collection and updates
• Determine best ways to effectively assess and further develop documentation tool
• Provide regular reports on use of tool and respond to requests regarding information about specific topics and/or geographies to stakeholders, including Chancellor and Provost, Boards of Trustees and Governors and the NC General Assembly.
• Provide information about ongoing projects
-Support of external relationships and partnerships
• Contribute to CCPS efforts to cultivate and sustain community and campus partnerships supporting engaged learning, scholarship and service through resources and regular communication
• Serve as a point person to bring together stakeholders for special project opportunities involving Carolina’s engagement with the state
• Work with Carolina Center for Public Service Development and Communications staff to ensure that Carolina’s partnerships with the state are promoted effectively and that funding sources are identified.
