The newborn screening follow-up social worker is responsible for the implementation of abnormal newborn screening follow-up in the state of North Carolina for specific conditions (e.g., congenital hypothyroidism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, galactosemia, biotinidase deficiency, SCID, SMA). This implementation will take place within the overall mission and goals of the Genetics and Newborn Screening Unit. This follow-up will be accomplished for families by coordination among staff at the SLPH, health care providers, and the coordinator by reporting abnormal screening results, recommending appropriate and timely follow-up, and providing consultation/technical assistance for local health care providers.

To perform the duties of the Newborn Screening Follow-up Social Worker, the person in this position must have strong first-hand working knowledge of, and experience working with, newborns and young children and their families. This person must have experience working with health care professionals who serve newborns and young children and their families; ability to exercise judgment in applying and interpreting health policies and procedures; experience in interpersonal communications; and be able to communicate precisely with high degree of accuracy and clarity. S/he must be able to exercise patience, providing information and explanations that are comprehensible at varying education levels. This person must also have exceptional organizational skills to manage a continuous caseload and document that all recommendations are completed.
