A highly organized individual to join a dynamic team of Area Agency on Aging professionals dedicated to resolving problems related to the health, safety, and welfare, and rights of individuals who reside in long-term care facilities, including skilled nursing facilities, adult care homes, and family care homes.
Description of Work
The LTC Ombudsman is part of a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary organization engaged in long-term, regional scale issues and shorter-term local government member technical assistance that integrates TJCOG’s focus areas of water resources, resiliency, transportation and mobility, housing, aging and human services, member engagement, technical assistance and strategy/innovation and data. This position helps educate residents, families, long-term care providers and the general public about residents’ rights and good care practices, resolves complaints made by or for residents, guides and trains community volunteers engaged in advocacy, and advocates for improved systems of long-term care.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The LTC Ombudsman must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and display maturity and judgement in handling difficult conversations. In-depth knowledge of the physical health, mental health, nutritional, economic, social, and recreational needs of frail and vulnerable adults, as well as knowledge of the federal and state regulatory rules governing long-term care is necessary. Capability in developing and conducting effective training programs for adult learners is also needed. The ability to use Microsoft Office 365 software is required, and previous experience with databases and omnichannel communication is helpful.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a human services field is required, with at least three years of experience in long-term care and/or relevant aging services. Master’s degree in gerontology, social work, sociology, or related field, with at least two years of experience in long-term care and/or relevant aging services is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
Travel is required within the 7-county region and possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license is necessary. Certification by the State of North Carolina as a LTC Ombudsman is required, following completion of a training and self-study program.
Starting Salary & Benefits
Hiring rate: $45,858. Position is eligible for a 5% increase after successfully obtaining LTC Ombudsman certification and completion of a 6-month probationary period.
