DSS Attorney

Provides legal services required by Human Services Agency/DSS Division. Attorney will consult with Child Protective Services, Foster Care, Adult Services and Child Support units. Attorney will represent the Agency in abuse/neglect/dependency proceedings in juvenile court and will file all necessary pleadings within specified time frames per NCGS including court orders. Attorney will represent the Agency in hearings involving current and potential adult wards and file all necessary orders with the Court. Attorney will represent the Agency in hearings to establish paternity, child support and medical obligations in District Court. Attorney may also represent the agency before the North Carolina Court of Appeals/North Carolina Supreme Court. Attorney will provide training of agency employees regarding legal issues and courtroom procedures. Attorney will also be responsible for training of staff on any new or revised statues and how they apply to the specific programs within HSA. Attorney will attend DSS Attorney conferences on a regular basis as well as webinars. It will be their responsibility to review these changes with staff. HSA Attorney will utilize resources such as the NC School of Government, Attorney General’s Office as well as the DSS attorney email list serve. HSA Attorney may also be required to assist in legal matters within Economic Programs. Occasional after-hours consultation may be needed with Child Welfare and Adult Services Units for emergency situations. Participation will also be necessary to represent the Agency in County and District-level meetings for the Court Improvement Project.
