The Pitt County Department of Social Services (DSS) is seeking a mission-driven leader to be their next Social Services Director. The successful candidate has a history of collaborating with staff, the local community and state partners to create stronger families, safer communities, and a better future for those they serve. The Director serves as the executive officer of the county board of social services executing the authority of the board as defined in GS 108A—14. The position is appointed by and reports to a five-member Local Social Services Board. Pitt County, designated in 2020 as an All-American County by the National Civic League, is located in the central portion of the Coastal Plain. Pitt County is approximately 90 miles east of Raleigh NC with a population of 180,742. The City of Greenville is the county seat. The area is home to East Carolina University, Brody School of Medicine and Vidant Medical Center. The Director is responsible for a budget of over $350 million dollars including Medicaid and Food Stamp benefits and slightly over 300 employees.
The three main program areas are Economic Services Programs, Social Work Programs, and Family Support Services. The programs are housed in three separate locations.
Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of the legal and philosophical basis for public welfare programs. Considerable knowledge of principles and practice of social work. Thorough knowledge of management principles, techniques, and practices. Knowledge of the agency’s organization, operation and objectives and applicable federal and state laws, rules, and regulations. Ability to exercise sound judgment in analyzing situations and making decisions; direct employees and programs in the various areas of responsibility; and develop and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, and with federal, state, and local officials.
Minimum Training and Experience Requirements: A master’s degree in social work and two years of supervisory experience in the delivery of client services; or a bachelor’s degree in social work and three years of supervisory experience in the delivery of client services, one of which must have been in Social Services; or graduation from a four year college or university and three years of supervisory experience in the delivery of client services, two of which must have been in Social Services; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Pitt County offers a competitive salary and benefits package. Salary is negotiable commensurate with experience. Valid North Carolina driver licensed required.
