Weems and Maxwell launch “Social Workers Unite”

UNC School of Social Work faculty member Marty Weems and alumna Katie Maxwell, MSW ’98, have launched a new initiative called Social Workers Unite.

Weems and Maxwell forged a friendship during a graduate internship 15 years ago. Both share a love of social work, and are committed to “bring social work back to its roots in advocacy for marginalized populations and social justice.” Weems is a clinical assistant professor at the School, and passionate about social work education and integrity in social work practice. Maxwell works in private practice, and is a social advocate and champion of human rights.

Social Workers Unite was created to connect and support social workers, social advocates, educators, and all other social development practitioners who work diligently to promote social and economic equality and justice for all citizens of the world. Most importantly, Social Workers Unite is a place for social workers and other human services professional to mobilize and advocate, explains Weems.

They are also looking for participants to march in the N.C. Pride Parade in Durham on Sept. 29 to support and advocate for equal rights for all people. The group will gather at noon on Campus Drive, Duke East Campus at the parade check-in area, and will march at 1:00 p.m. Participants are invited to wear a social work shirt if you have one or Gay Pride colors. “We need your support to make this a successful event,” said Weems.
