Soltys Scholar Laura Bradbury: Serving the aging population

Laura Bradbury is the 2011 recipient of the Florence Soltys Scholarship. It was established in 2007 in memory of Soltys, a distinguished School of Social Work faculty member. The award is given to students who have chosen to work in the field of serving the aging population. Bradbury is an MSW student in the Winston-Salem Advanced Standing Distance Education MSW Program. She is a native of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Since completing her bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Utah in 2009, Bradbury has worked as a social worker in a rural hospice company in Martinsville, Va.

Bradbury’s concentration is management and community practice and she plans to use the skills she is developing as a student at UNC to work to develop and enhance programs serving the aging population in a variety of needs. “There is a great deal we can learn as we continue to study and learn from these individuals,” she said.

“I am grateful to be a recipient of this award and for the opportunity to honor the legacy of Florence Soltys,” said Bradbury. “She has created a lasting legacy at the School of Social Work. There is a great need for social workers who are passionate about meeting the needs of the elderly, and thanks to the generous contributions of supportive donors, it will be possible for more social workers to continue serving the aging population.”
