INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Supportive Housing Communities
This is an exciting opportunity for an undergraduate or graduate student interested in the social sciences, social work, research design, statistics and/or chronic homelessness issues to design, implement and present a research study of formerly chronically homeless clients in a permanent supportive housing setting.
Supportive Housing Communities (SHC) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to alleviate homelessness and human suffering. The organization uses a permanent supportive housing approach, which links permanent, affordable rental housing with access to flexible, voluntary supportive services (case management, mental health/substance use treatment and employment services) to help the formerly chronically homeless maintain stable housing and live in the community. The housing is provided in two SHC-owned complexes and in privately-owned rental units throughout Mecklenburg County. The supportive services are primarily provided by SHC case managers/social workers.
The selected intern will design and implement a survey of SHC clients and SHC programs to ensure that the organization provides the most efficient and effectives services to its clients. The ideal candidate will work with their college/university and the SHC Director of Program Services to design the survey method, instrument and execution.
The ideal candidate will have these professional skills:
• Pursuing an undergraduate or master’s degree in the social sciences, social work, statistics, business or related field;
• Demonstrated experience in social science survey research;
• Proven knowledge of data collection methods, data analysis tools and statistical applications;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Project will include:
• Design and implementation of a full survey research project, including a clearly defined purpose statement and survey instrument;
• Conduct research of SHC programs in addition to relevant local and national homeless data, programs and best practices;
• Schedule and conduct surveys of SHC clients and staff;
• Collect, record and analyze data using appropriate statistical methods;
• Interpret data analysis results and draw inferences and conclusions;
• Present research results to Director of Program Services, Board of Directors and outside agency partners;
• Collaborate with SHC leadership team and staff to identify next steps based on project results.
