Duncan, Stewart evaluating new project for N.C. Child Welfare System

The UNC School of Social Work (Dean F. Duncan, principal investigator, and C. Joy Stewart, co-investigator) will serve as the local evaluator of Project Broadcast: Disseminating Trauma-Informed Practices to Children in the N.C. Child Welfare System.

Project Broadcast is funded through a $3.2 million, five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Children’s Bureau.  The North Carolina Division of Social Services is the lead agency for this project and partners include the Center for Child and Family Health (CCFH), the North Carolina Child Treatment Program (NC CTP), as well as the UNC School of Social Work.

Project Broadcast will serve Buncombe, Craven, Cumberland, Hoke, Pender, Pitt, Scotland, Union, and Wilson counties. The project will leverage existing resources, complement existing Federal and State initiatives and collaborate with experts and partners including trauma experts, ACF technical assistance centers, System of Care professionals, state and local leadership, community partners, practitioners, and consumers. The project’s goal is to promote the safety, permanency, and well-being of children, adolescents, and families involved in the North Carolina child welfare system following significant traumatic experiences and exposures, through:

  • Development and support of a trauma-informed child welfare workforce and system addressing service needs across the practice continuum from prevention to post-adoption care, in partnership with other System of Care professionals and leadership.
  • Development, integration, and support of a platform to implement and disseminate an array of evidence-based mental health treatment modalities for children and adolescents who have experienced trauma.
