The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work will graduate 133 students during its commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11, 2019.
The graduates include 130 students who will receive Master of Social Work degrees and three students who will receive Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work degrees.
In addition, one of the MSW graduates will receive a dual degree in law from UNC, one will receive a dual degree in divinity from Duke University, one will receive a dual degree in public administration from UNC, and nine will receive a dual degree in public health from UNC.
“Celebrating our graduates and their achievements is a highlight of the year,” Dean Gary Bowen noted.
Dean Bowen will also recognize five outstanding SSW alumni during the ceremony, presenting the Distinguished Alumni Award to Susanna Birdsong (MSW ’08), Noel Bost, Ph.D. (MSW ’96), Jessica Burroughs (MSW ’98), Mia Ives-Rublee (MSW ’09), and Marci White (MSW ’78).
Iris Carlton-LaNey, Ph.D., Berg-Beach Distinguished Professor of Community Social Work, will serve as commencement speaker for the ceremony.
With a career spanning more than 40 years, Dr. Carlton-LaNey is a nationally-renowned scholar who has received many accolades for her work, including the National Association of Social Workers NC Social Worker of the Year award, the 50 Heroes for Justice award and the Social Work Pioneer award.
Kristen Register Lakis (MSW ’12), newly-elected president of the SSW Alumni Council, will also speak during the ceremony.
