Autism conference set for September

The UNC School of Social Work is among the sponsors of Northwest AHEC’s conference, “Autism 2010: Crossing Bridges Despite the Challenges.”

It will be held Sept. 23-24 at the Village Inn Golf & Conference Center in Clemmons, N.C.

This workshop should be of interest to all professionals working with persons on the autism spectrum and their families including nurses, psychologists, mental, allied and public health professionals, professionals in training, consumers and family members.

As the prevalence of autism increases, the need continues for health professionals to be aware of issues affecting individuals with autism spectrum disorder. This conference will provide participants with an update on current trends in treatments and available resources with an emphasis on social thinking. Additional focus areas will include issues pertaining to advocacy, mental health and physical care.

Upon completion of the program, you should be better able to:

  • Identify current research taking place in the field of autism;
  • Describe how the Think Social curriculum can help autism spectrum disorder (ASD) patients;
  • Discuss genetic factors relating to autism;
  • Explain the benefits of talking to peers, teachers and school personnel about a child’s disability;
  • Identify brain imaging techniques and neuropsychological testing related to the brain-behavior relationship;
  • Explain the importance of advocacy; and
  • Discuss DSM changes to ASD diagnosis.

Conference topics include Early Diagnosis & Genetics, Neuroimaging with Autism, Accepting Differences, Diet, Communication Interventions, Asperger’s Disorder Update including DSM-V, Self Advocacy and more.
