Faculty, staff, friends and family gathered Aug. 19 at the Carolina Inn to honor Lane Cooke, who is retiring in September after nearly 50 years of service to the state of North Carolina. For the last 27 years, Cooke has served as the program coordinator for the Family and Children’s Resource Program (FCRP), where she has been responsible for the day-to-day operation of the program, including management of state-funded contracts with the North Carolina Division of Social Services, the North Carolina Division of Public Health, and the North Carolina Division of Aging. In addition, she has managed program activities with external organizations as well as consultation and technical assistance with state and county organizations in the field of family and child welfare services.

Over the course of her nearly five-decade career in North Carolina, Cooke has served as a social worker in Robeson and Wake counties, as a social work supervisor in Orange County and as a program manager for the state Division of Social Services. A 1979 MSW graduate of UNC, Cooke joined the School’s faculty in 1991 as the educational coordinator and consultant for the School’s Center for Aging Research and Education Services. She began her current role with FCRP in 1993. Cooke has received several awards for her service over the years, including the Chancellor’s Excellence in Management Award in 2010. During Cooke’s retirement celebration, professor Kim Strom-Gottfried presented her with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, among the most prestigious awards conferred by the Governor of North Carolina. The award is given to individuals for exemplary service to the state and to their communities.
