Students graduate from Substance Use & Addictions Specialist Program; Weems honored

The UNC School of Social Work honored students graduating from the Substance Use & Addictions Specialist Program (SUAS) with a luncheon and awards ceremony on May 8 at the Carolina Inn. Students enrolled in the SUAS program completed their master’s program concentration requirements as well as 180 hours of substance abuse specific education and a field placement focusing on addictions.

The MSW Class of 2017 program graduates are: Jill Baron, Katherine Barron, Nicolee Knowles, Shane Phillips, Jennifer Mossefin, Allison Schad, Christine Shaw, Sarah Sterling, Tess Cialdini, April Walkowski, Pamela Wellman and Ashley Wilhelm.

During the ceremony, the School also presented the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs (ATOD) Pioneer Award to Marty Weems, a clinical assistant professor. The annual award honors an individual for their commitment and advocacy for substance use disorder treatment and education programs in North Carolina. Although Weems was unable to attend the luncheon, SUAS director Michael McGuire presented a plaque in her honor for Weems’ contributions and devotion to the specialty program.
