School welcomes HBCU students to 5th annual Diversity Recruitment Event

The UNC School of Social Work welcomed 14 students from North Carolina’s historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to its 5th annual on campus Diversity Recruitment Event on Feb. 27-28.

This recruitment program is designed to nurture strong linkages with HBCUs and academic programs across the state that promote access to higher education and diversity on college campuses.

This year’s event included participants from Bennett Collect, Fayetteville State University, North Carolina State A&T University, North Carolina Central University, Shaw University and Winston-Salem State University. The event was co-sponsored by the North Carolina chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, the UNC Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs and the UNC Graduate School.

During their time on campus, students enjoyed lunch with SSW faculty and our co-sponsors, sat in on a class with current MSW students, and participated in a GRE overview workshop with Tina Souders and a writing workshop with Diane Wyant.
Participating students also enjoyed meeting with faculty, staff, and current MSW students, many of whom answered questions and helped ease participants’ anxiety about applying to the MSW program in the future.
