Bowen selected as a 2016 Fellow of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare

Dean Gary L. Bowen has been selected as a 2016 Fellow of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare. Bowen is among 15 educators tapped for the honor, which recognizes the distinguished accomplishments of scholars and practitioners who are “dedicated to achieving excellence in high-impact work that advances social good.”

The selected fellows will be inducted during a public ceremony at the Society for Social Work and Research Conference on Jan. 13, in New Orleans, La.

“The fellows of the academy are all strong leaders in integrating scientific methods and social work practice and policy and an enormous resource for the field,” Richard Barth, AASWSW president and dean of the University of Maryland, School of Social Work, said in a statement. “I am delighted that 15 more fellows will be inducted, as this will significantly strengthen the range and impact of our work to address the grand challenges facing our society.”

Bowen, who was named the new dean for the UNC School of Social Work in August, has been with UNC since 1985. He also currently serves as Kenan Distinguished Professor in the School.

Active in many professional associations, Bowen is a Fellow in the National Council on Family Relations and a Fellow in the Society for Social Work and Research. Earlier this year, he was identified as one of 40 “high impact” social work scholars in a study published in the peer-reviewed journal Research on Social Work Practice.
