Director of Field Education Rebecca Brigham was appointed for three years as chair of the Council on Field Education (COFE) of the Council on Social Work Education. In this capacity, she will also serve on the Commission on Educational Policy. The role of COFE is to recommend policy statements and accreditation standards that advance field education as the signature pedagogy of social work and to provide leadership and consultation to CSWE regarding field education matters.
Professor Iris Carlton-LaNey is the winner of the 2015 Hortense K. McClinton Outstanding Faculty Staff Award. This award, presented by the UNC General Alumni Association’s Black Alumni Reunion, honors a faculty or staff member, past or present, who has made outstanding strides in educating and developing Carolina’s undergraduate, graduate or professional students. She will be honored at the Light on the Hill Society Scholarship Awards Gala on Nov. 6, 2015. Full story
Associate Professor Gina Chowa spoke at a seminar on Oct. 9 in Washington, D.C., “Pathways to Development: Evidence from YouthSave.” She presented at a session on “Findings from YouthSave: Outcome and Impact.” Chowa was co-principal investigator of the YouthSave Project, investigating impacts of youth savings in Ghana, Kenya, Columbia, and Nepal. In addition, she was the PI for the longitudinal experimental impact study in Ghana. The discussion covered new research including the findings of YouthSave’s Savings Demand Assessment – an analysis of demographic and transaction patterns from 70,000 YouthSave accounts – and the results of the longitudinal experimental impact study in Ghana, which is the largest in the youth asset building field to date.
Clinical Assistant Professor Jodi Flick presented a Lunch and Learn on suicide for the Mental Health Association at the Chapel Hill Library on Sept. 21. She also presented on “Suicide: Prevention, Intervention and Postvention” for AHEC in Charlotte on Sept 28.
Coordinator of Student Affairs Annie Francis and Assistant Director of Recruitment, Admissions & Financial Aid Ashley McMillan are participating as advocates in the Carolina Firsts program, which provides support through mentorship to first generation college students at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Professor Kim Strom-Gottfried is featured in the Adelphi University School of Social Work’s 2105 magazine, Impact, in a full-page alumni profile story, “Kim Strom-Gottfried: Ethics in Action.” She is a 1981 MSW graduate of the School. Read story (page 7)
AHEC Liaison Sherry Mergner, Clinical Professor Anne Jones, UNC-Prime Care Program Coordinator Meryl Kanfer, and Family Support Program team members Tamara Norris and Barbara Leach are featured in the Sept. 2015 edition of UNC’s Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities (CIDD) newsletter. The story highlights a new collaboration with CIDD to develop specialized education and training for providers who work with individuals who have both developmental disabilities and behavioral health issues, and their families.
