Students raise money, plant pinwheels, for child abuse awareness

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and the School’s Social Work Student Organization (SoWoSO) planned an event to raise awareness. For the last several weeks, students collected donations from faculty, staff, and friends to sponsor blue pinwheels, the symbol for child abuse prevention, for $2.

Pinwheels for Prevention is a national campaign by Prevent Child Abuse. The pinwheel is meant to symbolize childlike notions and stands for the chance at the healthy, happy and full lives all children deserve.

Sponsored pinwheels were used to create a “pinwheel garden” in the tree beds near the entrance of the School of Social Work on April 6. Prior to planting, they observed a moment of silence to honor victims, survivors, and casualties of child abuse. The pinwheels will remain in place until April 30.

Students collected a total of $325 in donations, with all proceeds going to Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina. The effort was organized by MSW student Daniel Ball.
