Professor Natasha Bowen has joined the board of Communities in Schools of Orange County. Two doctoral students, Charity Watkins and Chris Wretman, are also working with the organization to collect School Success Profile data from participants, to develop an evaluation plan, and to conduct analyses.
Associate Professor Mimi Chapman presented, on behalf of her “Envisioning Health” project research team, at the National Institutes of Health, Methodological Approaches to Measure Culture meeting. This was a grantee meeting in which PIs presented their respective team’s work and received feedback and discussed next steps. In addition, Chapman was asked to write a post for the Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research’s blog called “The Connector” prior to the grantee meeting.
Also related to Envisioning Health, a selection of the photographs taken as part of the Photovoice component of the project, are on display in a study bay in the Ackland Art Museum. They are part of an educational unit being used by American Studies Professor Joy Kasson on migration and the question of “who tells the story” in photography.
Associate Professor Gina Chowa and Director of Field Education Rebecca Brigham presented at the 4th International Conference on Promoting Social Justice and Empowerment: Addressing Local and Global Challenges. The conference was organized by BPHE Society’s Center for Studies in Rural Development, Institute of Social Work and Research, Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, India. Chowa presented on, “The role of youth savings in promoting health and well-being of youth: Evidence from Ghana.” Brigham presented on, “Cultural Humility: How a study abroad experience shapes social work values.”
Clinical Assistant Professor Jodi Flick will present at the 2015 North Carolina Suicide Prevention Summit, in Raleigh on May 12.
Clinical Assistant Professor Marilyn Ghezzi will deliver the keynote address at the National Association of Social Workers-North Carolina Chapter’s Clinical Social Work Institute on May 4 in Wrightsville Beach. She will speak on, “DSM-5: Ethical implications.”
Clinical Assistant Professor Lisa de Saxe Zerden will assume the role of associate dean for academic affairs on July 1, 2015.
Two faculty were recently honored as a “Hometown Hero” with WCHL radio’s Village Pride Award. Clinical Assistant Professor Bebe Smith on March 31, and Professor Rebecca Macy on April 7. They were each featured on WCHL throughout the day. Listen
Retired faculty member Irene Zipper made two presentations to the CHILD program at Jönköping University in Jönköping, Sweden, in March. They were entitled, “Supporting families with children who have special needs,” and “Families and early intervention.”
