Faculty and staff briefs

Gina Chowa was awarded a promotion from assistant professor to associate professor with tenure.
Emeritus faculty member Andrew Dobelstein has a new book out, “Poverty in the United States: Developing Social Welfare Policy for the Twenty-first Century,” published by Palgrave MacMillan. This is his eighth social welfare policy book.

Cynthia Fraga Rizo is the recipient of a UNC Junior Faculty Development award for her project, “Developing North Carolina Practice Guidelines for Latina Survivors of Partner Violence.” It is a collaborative project with the N.C. Coalition Against Domestic Violence to examine the service-related experiences and currently available services for Latina survivors in the state. Findings from this study will be used to identify of the training and technical support needs of N.C. domestic violence and culturally-specific agencies, and to develop best practice guidelines for serving Latina IPV survivors.

Josh Hinson is among an interdisciplinary group of UNC faculty preparing to lead students in a spring break service project, “Inter-professional Service Learning to Increase Understanding of Children’s Migrant Latino Health Issues.” This one-credit UNC elective course offers a unique opportunity for health professional students to learn experientially about the health needs of unaccompanied children immigrants who have settled into North Carolina, and ways to provide culturally competent care to one segment of the rapidly growing Latino population.

Paul Smokowski is leaving the UNC faculty and will become the dean of the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare this summer.

Lisa Zerden had a letter published in the Jan. 2015 American Journal of Public Health, “HIV/AIDS in Puerto Rician People Who Inject Drugs: Policy Considerations.”
