MSW student Monique Smith was awarded a competitive Council for Social Work Education (CSWE) 2014 Annual Program Meeting Student Travel Scholarship. Only three students nationwide received this honor — one BSW, one MSW and one Ph.D. student. Awardees receive complimentary registration and funds to assist with travel expenses to attend the 2014 CSWE Annual Program Meeting, Oct. 23-26, in Tampa, Fla. The three will be recognized at the conference’s Leadership Networking Reception on Thurs., Oct. 23 at 5:00 p.m.

A blog post by MSW student Natalie Ziemba, Impact of Intimate Partner Violence,” was published on the KIPS (Keys for Interactive Parenting Scale) website. As part of her field placement this year, Ziemba is interning with the residential shelter at InterAct of Wake County, a nonprofit that provides safety, support, and awareness to victims and survivors of domestic violence and rape/sexual assault. Doctoral students to lead symposium at SSWR conference

Four doctoral students from Dr. Matthew Howard’s first Systematic Review course submitted a symposium abstract to the Society for Social Work and Research’s (SSWR) Annual Conference and were accepted. Their symposium is entitled, “Promoting Effective Policies and Practices: The Untapped Potential of Systematic Reviews in Social Work Research,” and each submitted an abstract for their individual papers. The papers are:

  • Charity Watkins (3rd year Ph.D.): “Educational Success Among Elementary School Children from Low Socioeconomic Status Families: A Systematic Review of Parenting Factors”
  • Todd Jensen (2nd year Ph.D.): “Perceived Stepparent-Child Relationship Quality: A Systematic Review”
  • Kanisha Coleman (3rd year Ph.D.): “Factors Associated with Kinship Caregivers’ Formal Service Use: A Systematic Review”
  • Brianna Lombardi (2nd year Ph.D.): “Bright Light Treatment of Child and Adolescent Depression and Depressive Symptoms: A Systematic Review”

The conference will be held Jan. 14-18, 2015, in New Orleans.
