School celebrates 93rd annual commencement

The UNC School of Social Work held its 93rd annual hooding ceremony on Sat., May 10. Over 1,200 people packed Memorial Hall to celebrate the 133 MSW and six Ph.D. graduates.

Dean Jack Richman and Alumni Council President Ebon Freeman-James, MSW ’02, each welcomed the audience. Gene Nichol, a distinguished professor of law, and the director of the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity, gave the commencement address.

In a special presentation by Brittany Little and Monica Ferenz, the MSW Class of 2014 recognized Marilyn Ghezzi as Most Outstanding Faculty Member; Mat Despard, Most Innovative Faculty Member; Lisa Zerden, Most Supportive Faculty Member; and Beth Sauer, Most Supportive Staff Member.

Seanee Garris Alexander, MSW ’99; Chris Estes, MSW ’00; and Mary Deyampert-McCall, MSW ’80, were honored with 2014 Distinguished Alumni Awards.
