Student briefs: Horsford, LGBTQ Caucus, Smith, Ham, Gelblum

Doctoral student Christina Horsford has been selected for the 4th cohort of the Association for Gerontology Education in Social Work’s Gerontological Social Work Pre-Dissertation Initiative. This honor was made in recognition of her potential in the field of gerontological social work. As an awardee, she will receive a $1,000 stipend for expenses to attend the 66th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Gerontological Society of America this month in New Orleans. Along with the other awardees, she will attend a day-long pre-conference session about gerontological research strategies, the dissertation process, teaching, and writing for publication. She will also have an opportunity to meet and network with gerontological social work scholars and other students.

The LGBTQ Caucus, a student group at the UNC School of Social Work, in partnership with the School’s Field Education Office, hosted “Managing and Supporting LGBTQ Identities in the Workplace: A Panel Discussion” on Oct. 28 in the auditorium. The campus community and public was invited to come learn from LGBTQ practitioners about the unique challenges they face, and how to be supportive and affirming in their own agencies. A diverse group of panelists shared their experiences and discussed the intersection of their layered identities, and then answered questions from the audience. MSW students Mark Smith and Daniel Ham helped organize the event.

MSW student Reuben Gelblum had a Letter to the Editor published in the Oct. 15 Daily Tar Heel, “Football slogan sends the wrong message.”
