Three European students join the School this semester

This semester the UNC School of Social Work welcomes three European students, two from Germany and one from Portugal.

Johanna Schneider and Nicole Pertl are masters students from Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich. Joana Cancela is a doctoral student from the University of Porto in Porto, Portugal.

They are sponsored by a project called GEDS, Concentration in Global Education and Developmental Studies, which focuses on disability studies broadly defined. It is funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education (FIPSE) in the U.S. and by the European Union in Europe. The purpose of the project is to facilitate graduate student education at three universities in the U.S., and three in Europe. The project aims to strengthen policy and practice in services for young children, and to prepare students for leadership roles in their home settings.

The students have been working with Dr. Irene Nathan Zipper of the Family Support Program at the School of Social Work, and auditing classes. They will be at UNC through December.
