Local chapter of “Social Work with Groups” association forming

By Anne Jones

Exciting news for social workers involved with groups!

Faculty from the UNC School of Social Work and UNC-G and N.C. State University’s social work departments are collaborating to form a local N.C. chapter of the International Association of Social Work with Groups (IASWG), formerly the Association of the Advancement for Social Work with Groups (AASWG).  The new unit has been given seed money to begin to develop more local activities to support group work practice, education and research. Current members will soon be surveyed on the kinds of events that they want to become involved in. Potential activities include small supervision groups, workshops and conferences.

Joining the new chapter is a great opportunity for practitioners to further enhance their group facilitation skills and learn about ways of evaluating their work. It is also a way for social workers and student social workers to become leaders in this organization in North Carolina and within the national organization of IASWG.

For more information on how to become involved, please contact Anne Jones at annejone@email.unc.edu, Marilyn Ghezzi at mghezzi@email.unc.edu, Willa Casstevens at wjcasste@ncsu.edu or visit aaswg.org.  We encourage students to get involved!
