Professor Iris Carlton-LaNey, Ph.D., received the 2011 Legacy Award from the Sisters of the Academy (SOTA). The award was “given in recognition of scholarship, teaching, and service to women who have paved the way and left a mark in which we celebrate and are honored to follow.”
Founded in 2001, the mission of Sisters of the Academy (SOTA) Institute is to facilitate the success of Black women in the Academy. Specifically, the organization aims to create an educational network of Black women in higher education in order to foster success in the areas of teaching, scholarly inquiry and service to the community; facilitate collaborative scholarship among Black women in higher education; and facilitate the development of relations to enhance members’ professional development.
Carlton-LaNey participated in the SOTA BootCamp in August in Tallahassee. SOTA provided her with a special gift and arranged for a book signing after the organization’s 10th anniversary dinner. Her book, “African Americans Aging in the Rural South,” was provided to all BootCamp participants.
