Fraser working with Sweden on children’s mental health initiative

Mark Fraser, John A. Tate Distinguished Professor for Children in Need, was invited by the Swedish National Research Council to review proposals for a major children’s and youth initiative.

A dozen scholars were selected from around the world to participate on the Review Panel. Fraser is one of three from the United States, and the only social worker. He will meet with the other reviewers in Stockholm in November 2011 and February 2012 to make awards from among over 170 applicants.

Sweden is about the size of North Carolina, and it has allocated 50 million SEK each year for the next six years to advance mental health knowledge about and services for children. The program aims to:

  • Boost research in the long-term in regard to children’s and young people’s mental health in Sweden;
  • Develop new knowledge about and methods for studying children’s and young people’s mental health;
  • Provide a scientific basis for initiatives and action by utilizing results for the purpose of creating preconditions for good mental health among children and young people; and
  • Advance interdisciplinary and, where appropriate, trans-disciplinary research and innovation.
