Anderson Scholar Jeanne Cross: Helping survivors of sex trafficking and exploitation

Jeanne Cross is the recipient of the 2011 Kristin Marie Ten Harmsel Anderson Memorial Scholarship. This award is given in honor of Anderson, a graduate of the MSW program. Anderson’s friends and family offer this scholarship in recognition of her assistance to persons in need, especially children.

“This scholarship will assist me in acquiring the skills and knowledge needed to contribute to the field of social work,” said Cross. “I am grateful for the donors who make it possible for students like me to receive training in this field.”

Cross is a third-year full-time student in UNC’s MSW/MDiv (divinity) dual-degree program with Duke University. Her first field placement is at Family Abuse Services of Alamance County. She is a native of Moulton, Ala. and a 2009 graduate of Samford University with a B.A. in psychology and sociology.

Cross has worked among girls and women sex-trafficked in India and Nepal, and currently speaks at churches and conferences to raise anti-trafficking funding and public awareness.

After graduating, Cross plans to offer rehabilitative services to survivors of sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. “I am thankful for the ways the Kristin Marie Ten Harmsel Anderson Memorial Scholarship will assist me in achieving these goals,” said Cross.
