School’s IT team wins competitive UNC award

The School of Social Work’s Computer and Information Technology Unit (CITU) beat out 18 other campus departments to win UNC’s 2011 Information Technology Award in the team category. The winners were announced at the 19th Annual Information Technology Awards Ceremony and luncheon on April 12 at the Carolina Club in the George Watts Hill Alumni Center.

According to awards planning committee member Gary Wilhelm of the School of Law, the committee was initially struck by the sheer number of nomination letters that came in for CITU — 44. But when they started reading, it was “the heartfelt, human aspect” of the letters that really set the team apart, said Wilhelm.

Letter after letter — from faculty, staff, students and alumni — gave high praises and expressed deep appreciation for CITU team members always willing to go the extra mile. Always there when you need them … Patient with the technically-challenged …. Unsung heroes … I knew help was on the way … Thank goodness we have them.

That sentiment is echoed by Dean Jack Richman. “This award is a reflection of the work that they do for each individual here,” said Richman. “They are highly competent and knowledgeable about technology, but it’s the goodwill they provide and the way they interface with people that makes their customer service so outstanding.”

CITU team members are Manuel Garcia, director; Vanessa Mitchell, computer support analyst; John Anderson, programmer; and Jim Griffith, computer consultant.
